The author has done an excellent job at making a complex subject simple to understand. I would highly recommend this text to other teachers. Many of the standard textbooks out there are incredibly expensive and boring.
This text makes learning easy and fun. I have tried to learn web design through various online tutorials, but it never seemed to click. However, in the form of a book the concepts seem a lot clearer. I think the author includes plenty of pictures and visual examples This book is a good start. I think the best way to learn is to experiment a LOT with test pages. Also, view the source codes on random web pages you visit and see how things are put together on real, polished web pages.
The problem with books on technology is that within a couple years things can change so much. If you're interested in web development as a career, you definitely have to be on top of what's going on. All in all, I am definitely happy with the purchase. True to its title, this comprehensive book takes web novices from the bare basics to a working knowledge of designing websites.

Top international reviews. A very detailed book assumes that you don't have any web experience or even knowing how is the the web works. Starts from the fundamentals of web and ends with more advanced Java scripts. The way its written reminds a lot me of college books as it has a lot of pictures, paragraphs built-points and "test yourself" sort of actives which I think are nice to have. The book is well laid out gets you started quickly; it explains the clearly what you need to do, why you have to do it and seems very focused on 'good practice'. The way it is laid out makes it also ideal as a reference book once you start designing websites. I'm about to leave a job I hate and persue a career as a web developer, and I owe so much of that to this book.
